Multigo

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

I think I’m going to move forward with the idea I had below (serialized reviewing). I’ll be setting up a series of web pages for this, and I’ve decided on using Multigo for the images (at least for now… maybe a capture program will be better for move variations). Of course each review will have the SGF linked.

The other thought I had was to discuss each game based on the theme of mistakes made. The reason I’ll be going with this is because there’s typically one or two “losing” moves, including the game I had last night! So the first theme will possibly be “Greed” and “Underestimating your Opponent.”

I’ll be working on the template for this set of webpages… with any luck, I can incorporate this into a blog format to make it easier on myself! (w.bloggar can be very useful - especially where images are concerned)!

A new idea…

I’m planning on starting a serial where I comment my game of the day (or two) and post it online in a readable format - either here (blog) or using a separate system. The idea is to get me to play at least one game a day and thoroughly comment it (and not in a stupid way, since it will be rather public). This may require a bit of setup, but it should be fairly possible!

The only thing I have to wait for before I start this is my computer!! Currently I’m using my iMac at home (and my work PC at work, but I can’t really do this there ;). I like the iMac (it’s OS X - which is BSD *nix), but it doesn’t run SmartGo (which is great for publishing).

These files will be either in HTML or PDF - not sure what will be easiest for me… Look for it to start within the next few weeks.

I’ve been noticing lately (and having a kid on the way doesn’t help) that my time is severely limited for go. In fact, I used to have my lesson on Fridays during lunch, but have had to move this to a non-work time because of the firewall… now Sundays at 10 am (my time) is the only time we both have free, but it really interferes with other plans (which mostly include getting ready for the baby).

My latest thing (now that my computers are down due to painting, cleaning, and generally moving everything around) - and something that my wife has only complained a little bit about Wink is to use my iMac to play on KGS + IGS some evenings (with minor distractions from my wife, dog, and TV). I don’t play as often as I should, though.

I am getting really good at reading lately… because the one thing I can do anywhere is tsumego. The latest are “Get Strong at L+D” and “Get Strong at Tesuji.” I don’t look at many pro games or joseki lately. Though I should work through the rest of the joseki, esp 4-4 - learning most of the 3-4 joseki has really helped my game, but I’m playing mostly 4-4 now. I find joseki study is best done with my Ishida books and a real goban… the information sticks better if I actually play the joseki sequence than if I just visualize it.

And my rank is quite strange right now… I’m jumping back and forth between 8k, 7k, and 7? on KGS, and it seems like I can win or lose a close game vs an 8k-6k… not sure why, though - just wish I could play more!

I’m slowly moving more toward IGS, though… it seems to be much easier to find a game there even though I don’t have a solid rank (no *). I’ve been playing as a 13k, though some of the other 13k* I’ve played seem weak (KGS 10-11k perhaps). I’ve been a 13k on IGS for at least 4 months - only used the account before to observe games (which I still do often - I can observe easier than play when I’m watching tv with my wife).

That’s about it, though… I should go back to my old goal of at least one game per day. Harder now that I cannot play at lunch time.

(Dragon Go Server and LittleGolem do give me some go at work, but I don’t think they help me improve…)

I wrote a blog a while back about something I wanted to design allowing collaboration on SGF (reviewing, joseki discussion, etc). Instead I’m looking into a new project started on sensei’s library called Ultimate Go Server

This looks like it has the potential to do everything I’ve mentioned before — and then some! :) Check it out.
