MGA Summer Handicap Tournament

Monday, July 17th, 2006

Well, I had a tough time in this Quarter’s tournament! I won 1 of 4 games! The first game I had a tremendous lead with three corners, played an incorrect move that led to a ko about 10 moves later, losing me the corner. When ahead, it’s better to give up some small points than to lose the lead entirely!

The second game I played well (again getting 3 corners), but ended with about a 10 point loss. This was a no komi game as White.

The lunch break was excellent, though… the best Chinese restaurant is in Sommerville, MA across the street from the Davis Sq Starbucks! I took some pictures for the club here - I don’t have my new camera yet, so I didn’t want to take crappy no-flash pictures in the MGA Club room.

After Lunch, I managed my only win playing White in a 2 stone game. The strangest part of this is that I usually play worse when giving a handicap! I then lost a very exciting game after being given 2 stones. I managed a big capture early on, but my opponent managed a big one later. I probably should have played a little safer after gaining the lead (for the second time in this tournament).

In all, it was an exciting time, and SNEGA Represented! :D

New News Blog Page!

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

I’m going to start up a new Tamayo (Rhode Island Branch) family newsblog page! I’ve tried this in the past with limited success, but this time it should work significantly easier. Everything’s contained on my own site, and it’s (relatively) easy to reach from
Home and Work!

The latest news is my (to be shipped Monday) camera that’s coming (so expect some excellent pictures of Julian). The old-camera pictures are still very good:

SQUIRT! (Censored)

Julian really loves the bath - though it’s not easy… it’s especially great on a hot evening (like tonight). This picture is actually from a few days ago, but he has tons of fun with it :D There’s some parts fuzzed out because of the scary internet people (you know who you are…)

This weekend we were supposed to have a house showing, but the person who was coming to look at it decided not to come in before he even got out of the car! Apparently (as we heard from our realtor) he has a business that involves trucks and doesn’t think the side street we live on is wide enough. Our realtor also thinks he did the same thing to the house he went to see before ours because they were running very early from their 11am appointment. Everyone was pretty pissed and thought the guy should have gone to visit places before he scheduled the showing if a neighborhood street is something he wasn’t interested in! In fact, if he wants to live on a main road I bet he could get a better deal than the houses he’s looking at!

Tomorrow is my Go tournament! I don’t feel at all prepared for it (I’ve been spending too much time researching cameras and too little time studying). I’m car pooling with a couple other players to Sommerville, MA, the home of the Massachusetts Go Association. Wish me luck… the summer tournament usually has fewer players (usually 30-40 during the school season) so I may stand a chance! Last summer I got 3rd place! We’ve also been meeting at Starbuck’s in Garden City, Cranston, RI every Monday night… it looks as though we may actually be able to turn this into a real club (albeit a smallish one ;). Pictures from the last meeting:

The club - plus advertising...

I’ll be posting again after the tournament (probably in the “Go” section of this Meta-Blog) if you’re interested in how things turned out!

Ordered a real camera…

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

This blog will probably be image rich as things get rolling (and probably some really bad images, too…)

I’ve decided to take up photography - I’ve got lots of moving subjects (the dog previously, and now my crazy kid) and I’d love to learn technical photography too! I’ve also got Greg interested in it… we may photoshoot around Rhode Island to get some practice (plus his wife says he can’t upgrade to a DSLR until he’s used the advanced P+S extensively).

I’ve sold some “play” stock that I invested when I was working for Lucent (not in Lucent stock, thankfully) and have ordered a Nikon D50 Kit that comes with the Nikkor 18-55mm DX lens. It comes with a $50 e-gift-card (special this week only), so I’ll also be ordering some protecting filters (UV filters that are essentially glass condoms), a holster, and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. Overall, it sounds like a good starter kit (the Zoom may be a Christmas present if I can convince Christy of it).

As a point of reference, my current photos are being archived at:

Flickr is an awesome website, and I’ve gone pro because it’s so cheap ($25/yr) and because it’s such a sweet service! Only my best pictures will be going up there, but it’s a good point of reference because I’ve already put up some digital images from my Kodak P+S (or is that PoS?)

It’s going to be fun… hope you’re looking forward to some (initially) terrible pictures! (I’ll be sure to throw in my GOOD pictures, too… when they start flooding in ;).
